Climate change was the core of an interesting panel discussion.

The key takeaways from the ASSOCHAM webinar titled, Leading the way: Driving environmental innovation held on the World Environment Day 2024.

The panel comprising Dr Mansa Nagabushanam – Chair DEI Assocham South Director, Centre of Excellence for Sustainability, and Director (Academics, research and administration), Ramaiah Institute of Management, Bangalore; L Sridhar, ESG Head, Bangalore International Airport Limited, Dr Suma Krishnaswamy, Founder President,  Cambium Biotechnologies, was moderated by Renjini Liza Varghese, CEO, WriteCanvas.

Renjini set the ball rolling for the webinar with startling statistics: India experienced over 165 deaths in June, highlighting the urgent need for fresh solutions and a collaborative approach to mitigate climate change. She initiated the discussion by highlighting the increasing number of climate casualties, particularly due to rising temperatures.

AI Washing Eroding Trust in ESG Initiatives?

The environmental, social, and governance (ESG) space has long grappled with greenwashing. In greenwashing, companies often under or over-quote their environmental commitment for marketing advantage. We are also familiar with phrases like Blue washing and Pinkwashing, categorized under the ‘S’ factor’S’ ESG.

AI washing is emerging as a significant challenge in ESG dynamics.

One may wonder about the connection between AI washing and sustainability. Therefore, we begin with a definition of AI washing.

AI washing is the practice of a business overstating the amount of AI that is used in its goods and services. A recent order regarding AI washing from the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) piqued my interest in this topic. Their position is unambiguous: businesses need to disclose their real AI integration. This is vital because exaggerated claims regarding AI’s capabilities have the potential to deceive stakeholders and investors.

I tried to connect the dots between AI and sustainability, and here is my take on the issue. 

We have seen tech platforms enabling, fast-tracking, and measuring the impacts of sustainability initiatives. Sustainability and technology go hand-in-hand. Technology and sustainability cannot be delinked from each other. All the same, if not controlled or measured, technology can also play a spoiler to the company’s company’s-2, -3, and now -4 measurements.

Take, for example, a company that touts its “AI-powered “sustainability initiative. This may, in reality, be fundamental data analysis. The misleading narrative is a classic case of AI-driven greenwashing. It can undermine transparency and erode trust in ESG, creating further hurdles in recognizing genuine sustainability efforts. This presents a huge concern.

Deception in the digital age:

The impact of a narrative is deep and wide. When companies embellish their AI prowess, stakeholders become sceptical. This hinders genuine AI advancements that could benefit both businesses and society.

Excited, AI washing can slacken tech adoption and hinder progress.

Let me give you an example. AI tools can optimize resource utilization, identify environmental risks, and enhance supply chain transparency. On the other hand, AI washing undermines the confidence of investors and stakeholders who fall prey to pretence or false reports and invest in companies that don’t deliver on their promises. This can have a significant impact on market dynamics.

AI washing is a sophisticated evolution of greenwashing. Companies can leverage AI-generated reports or fabricated data analysis to bolster their supposed sustainability efforts, making it increasingly difficult to differentiate genuine progress from marketing gimmicks.

How to safeguard against AI washing?

It is a call for extra vigilance. To combat AI washing and ensure the integrity of ESG initiatives, several key steps are essential:

Critical thinking: Do not take claims about AI at face value. Ask questions about the specific applications and their impact.

Prioritize transparency: Clearly articulate how AI is integrated into your ESG strategy. Businesses must provide detailed explanations of their AI-powered sustainability programs. What specific challenges are these programs designed to address? How is AI being utilized to achieve these objectives?

Independent verification: Support independent audits and certifications to substantiate the AI adoption and impacts in sustainability efforts. Also, encourage research and reporting that investigates and exposes AI washing practices.

Regulatory support:  Supporting regulatory bodies in establishing clear guidelines and enforcing them effectively is crucial in combating AI washing.

Investor and consumer education:  Empowering both investors and consumers through educational initiatives is crucial. Foster open dialogues and raise awareness about AI washing.

AI washing poses a significant threat to the integrity of ESG initiatives. However, through collaborative action and a collective commitment to transparency, we can ensure that AI is used as a force for good, driving genuine progress in sustainability.

After all, in today’s current landscape, trust is the bedrock of a solid corporate reputation and a key differentiator in attracting stakeholders who value genuine ESG commitment.

COP28: Phasing Out or Phasing Down Fossil Fuels?

The annual event, – Conference of Parties COP28, no doubt, will be a critical crossroads for energy transition.

Starting tomorrow (30 November to 12 December), the signatories will assemble in Dubai to deliberate and conclude on substantial action to mitigate climate change. The Indian Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi, also will be present during the first 2 days. It may be business as usual for those who are offering their first-ever review. The decibel levels may rise when the bossiest polluters (China, US) are asked to commit more to the loss and damage fund.

I believe that the debate on phasing out versus phasing down fossil fuels taking center stage at COP 28 this year. While the decision to completely phase out will be a bold and decisive step towards a cleaner, energy future, phasing down offers a more pragmatic approach, particularly for developing nations like India.

It is a fact that like many other developing countries, India’s energy landscape is currently dominated by fossil fuels, with coal alone accounting for 49% of electricity generation. The country’s ambitious renewable energy targets, aiming for 500 GW of installed capacity by 2030, are commendable. However, the sheer scale of India’s energy demand necessitates a gradual transition, which balances environmental protection and economic growth.

According to me, phasing down fossil fuels, rather than an abrupt phase-out approach, presents a more viable strategy. This approach allows the country to utilize its existing fossil fuel infrastructure while simultaneously investing in cleaner energy sources like renewables and hydrogen. The gradual reduction in fossil fuel reliance ensures a smooth transition without jeopardizing energy security.

The United Nations report, projecting continued fossil fuel production growth until 2030 for coal and 2050 for oil and gas, further supports the phasing-down approach. This projection highlights the need for a realistic transition timeline that aligns with global fossil fuel production trends.

Assessing countries’ climate mitigation goals only after fossil fuel production peaks makes sense. Because, by that time, nations will have a clearer roadmap for their energy transition and will have developed sustainable solutions like hydrogen to meet rising energy demands.

That is why I expect COP28 to delve into the phasing out versus phasing down debate, with discussions on stocktaking, commitments from major emitters like China and the US, and the loss and damage fund. I also see the anti-ESG lobbying taking center stage during this year. However, the real impetus for actionable change is likely to emerge from the phasing out versus phasing down conversations.

E-Tractors to boost sustainable agriculture in India

This first-of-its-kind electric tractor has been launched by Union Minister for Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh in  One Week One lab curtain raiser ceremony held at New Delhi in the presence of Secretary DSIR Dr. N Kalaiselvi and many other dignitaries.

Also, this impactful technology has been licensed to K N bioscience, a Hyderabad based Company famous for its Kushal Tractor brand and many biosciences related development/products to take it to the ground level and mass production; we are hoping for its grand success.

(Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute)- a constituent laboratory of the Indian Council of Scientific and Industrial Research has developed electric tractors or E-tractors to boost sustainable agriculture in India.

The indigenously designed and developed compact 100% Pure Electric Tractor named CSIR PRIMA ET11 is targeted at the small and marginal farmers of India, CSIR-CMERI said in a statement.

Salient features:

The salient features of the CSIR PRIMA ET11 are as follows:

  • Designed and manufactured with indigenous components and technologies
  • Dynamics, weight distribution, transmission engagements, lever and pedal position designed in accordance with the needs of agriculture field application
  • The lever, switches etc. placed for easy approach to the women. Electronic switches replace mechanical systems for easy operations

Battery:

  1. State of art Lithium-ion battery with Prismatic cell confirmation
  2. Has deep discharge capability for farming applications and a life of more than 3,000 cycles
  3. Can be charged using a conventional home charging socket
  4. Tractors charged for 7-8 hours can work for 4 hours continuously on the field or more than 6 hours of normal Haulage operation

Transmission:

Designed with a robust and efficient transmission system by using the semi-synchronised type gearing system. The design helps to achieve the desired efficiency at a minimum cost

Features:

  • Best in class hydraulic with lifting capacity of 500 kg or more (can be used for field and hauling operations)
  • Can tow 1.8-ton capacity trolley with a max speed of 25 kmph
  • Robust design to protect from mud and water
  • Customized design: The controller and the instrument cluster has been modified to suit the agricultural needs
  • Provided with a port called V2L i.e., vehicle to load, which allows the farmers to use the battery for secondary applications like pumping and irrigation when the tractor is not in operation.

Dr Jitendra Singh, Union Minister for Science and Technology, unveiled the tractor in the One Week One lab curtain raiser ceremony held at New Delhi in the presence of Secretary DSIR Dr. N Kalaiselvi and others.

In a move that will provide a boost to the country’s Make in India campaign, CSIR-CMERI mentioned in the statement that the technology has been licensed to Hyderabad-based K N Bioscience—a company famous for its Kushal Tractor brand for mass production of the e-tractors.

It is expected that this tractor CSIR PRIMA ET11 will create a breakthrough in sustainable agriculture while meeting the demands of small and marginal farmers in India. And thereby this development will trigger to lead India in the global tractor industry with revolutionary vision of Make for the World, it said in the statement.

Mainstay:

Agriculture primary source of livelihood for nearly 55% of Indian population, feeds *1.3 billion people and contributes significantly to the country’s GDP.

CSIR CMERI started its first indigenously developed SWARAJ Tractor in 1965, followed by 35hp Sonalika tractor in 2000 and then Small diesel tractor of 12hp Krishi Shakti in 2009 for small and marginal farmers.

However, most of the commercial equipment consists of high-power machines, which are only feasible to large farming areas and pose a challenge for Indian marginal farmers—who comprise more than 80% of the farmer community and have around 2 hectare of farming land or less.

E-tractors and India’s commitment to net zero:

According to an estimate, tractors consume about 7.4% of our country’s annual diesel usage and account for 60% of total agricultural fuel usage. Also, their PM2.5 and NOx emissions are likely to increase 4-5 times the current level in next two decades.

The e-tractors are a drive in the right direction considering India’s commitment to achieve Net Zero by 2070, and its COP 26 Glassgow commitment to reduce the total projected carbon emissions by one billion tones by the year 2030.

AIIMS joins the sustainable bandwagon with solar rooftop

AIIMS Delhi, one of India’s leading players in the healthcare segment has taken the solar route towards its sustainable journey. 

As one of the steps, a 9 KW rooftop solar solution was installed on the AIIMS Director, Dr M Srinivas’s Bungalow. The plant is expected to generate ~13,140 units per year. The project was inaugurated by Dr. Srinivas, and Mr P K Das, Chairman and Managing Director of IREDA.

The Noida-headquartered Jakson Group has collaborated with AIIMS and the project has been developed under the aegis of Jakson Welfare Trust, the CSR arm of the Group. The company has installed its latest high-efficiency Helia series solar panels, which are built on the A+ category of half-cut MonoPERC solar cells, to provide lower LCoE resulting in higher performance.  

Emphasizing on the importance of this initiative, Dr Srinivas said ” Collaborating with Jakson Group to build the Rooftop Solar project is an important step towards attaining our environmental objectives. We recognise green energy’s important role in not just improving our operational efficiency but also contributing to the greater environmental cause.”

Speaking on the occasion, Sameer Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director of Jakson Group, said “We are delighted to collaborate with AIIMS, Delhi, for this project. As a diversified energy company, Jakson is firmly committed to support the nationwide Net Zero Mission, through a bouquet of renewable energy solutions, and our partnership with AIIMS demonstrates this commitment.”

With this project, Jakson has inked another landmark with the prestigious healthcare institution along with providing power backup solutions and EPC services in the past for its Nagpur, Rishikesh and Bhubaneswar campuses.
