Steel Nests and Soaring Temperatures: A Wake-Up Call from Kerala

Renjini Liza Varghese

This blog is based on a Facebook post by a family friend who owns a building materials shop in Pathanapuram, Kerala. He recently found a discarded bird’s nest in his courtyard. Interestingly, this wasn’t made of twigs and coconut husks. But it was surprisingly built with scrap steel wires and components, in all likelihood picked up from his warehouse.

I have been writing about the soaring temperatures this summer in Kerala and the impact on people and their livelihoods. The bird’s nest post by my friend is an eye-opener.

Birds nest with wood and metals

Birds nest with wood and metal.

Kerala has been experiencing extreme heat for over a month, potentially causing birds to abandon their nests and flee due to the scorching temperatures. My friend separated the wooden materials and weighed the metal alone, which weighed 2.4 kilograms.

This is a stark reminder of how climate change is affecting all living beings. Just like humans, animals and birds are struggling. Birds’ habitats are changing from cozy hay and twigs to metal, and the increase in inside temperature may be the reason for this abandonment.

This was not an isolated incident. Several other friends from Kerala have narrated similar incidents during conversations.

The tale of this bird nest is heartbreaking and clever at the same time. It draws attention to how resourceful birds can be while simultaneously highlighting how urgent it is to combat climate change.

My friend tried adding humor to the post and said, “Maybe we need to hold a workshop for the birds by construction experts to teach them about eco-friendly nesting materials!”

But, on a serious note, this is a call to action for all of us. We can’t ignore this cry for help from nature. Here are some ways we can all take action:

Construction sector: The environment is greatly impacted by the construction sector. Green building techniques that reduce temperature rise must be promoted. This includes incorporating natural landscapes into building projects, encouraging energy efficiency, and employing sustainable materials.

Plant trees everywhere you go because they absorb carbon dioxide, cool the air, and provide shade. Plant trees in your backyard, support reforestation-focused organizations, and support community tree-planting campaigns.

Reduce Your Carbon Footprint: Our everyday choices contribute to climate change. Consider ways to reduce your carbon footprint, like using public transportation, switching to renewable energy sources, and consuming less energy at home.

Spread awareness: Share this story and educate others about the impact of climate change. Encourage others to take action to build a cooler planet.

Let’s not wait for birds to construct steel nests. We must cooperate to build a more sustainable future for all living things, including ourselves.

We must move past planning and take decisive action now. If not, get ready to be burned every summer!

The Bird’s Nest can be a beautiful bedtime story we can narrate to our children/grandchildren or impart as a lesson to the kindergarten/Anganwadi. This can become a collective initiative and an integral part of everyday routine for the future generations who are looking up to us. The responsibility is on our shoulders: Do we want to make sustainable raw materials and a healthy climate a science lesson for them at school? Or a reality and a green planet for them to lead a stress-free, healthy life.

Rockefeller Foundation injects $5M into Amazon Reforestation Fund

WriteCanvas News

The Amazon Reforestation Fund, an investment project started by Mombak, a Brazilian firm committed to generate top-notch carbon credits by reviving the Amazon’s forests, will receive $5 million from The Rockefeller Foundation. This financial donation is a part of a bigger $100 million funding plan created to support the largest biodiverse reforestation project with a goal of removing carbon from the region. Because of this assistance, Mombak will have the ability to increase soil health, boost biodiversity, extract carbon, and create opportunities for local residents that are economically viable.

“Nature-based solutions could help reduce one-third of the necessary global emissions by the end of the decade, but remain grossly underfunded, with an estimated $700 billion financing gap per year,” said Maria Kozloski, Senior Vice President of Innovative Finance at The Rockefeller Foundation.

“The Rockefeller Foundation is proud to help close this gap by investing in Mombak’s innovative model that seeks to remove carbon by reforesting the Amazon,” he added.

The company’s first project in Northern Brazil will plant three million trees with more than 100 native species, including 200,000 seedlings of endangered species. Over one million trees will be planted by next month, including endangered or vulnerable species such as Cedro Rosa (Cedrela fissilis), Castanheira (Bertholletia excelsa), Itauba (Mezilaurus itauba), Mogno (Swietenia macrophylla), and others. The first project has also had a positive impact on the region, creating over 50 formal jobs in the local municipality. It is expected that Mombak will kick off multiple additional projects of this kind before the end of 2023.

“The Rockefeller Foundation’s investment reinforces the integrity of our projects,” confirms Peter Fernandez, CEO and co-founder of Mombak. “One of the biggest issues in our industry is trust. We are working to create the world’s highest-integrity carbon projects.”

Mombak’s business model is centred on the creation, verification, and sale of carbon removal credits. It does this by reforesting Brazilian pastureland using native and biodiverse tree species to rebuild the forests of the Amazon. The additional carbon abated from the atmosphere from these new forests produces high-quality carbon removal credits. The credits are then sold via both spot sales and long-term customer offtake agreements.

COP28 Unveils Innovative Global Accountability and Inclusivity Program

WriteCanvas News

The two-week theme agenda for the conference has been unveiled by the UAE Presidency of COP28 and is aligned with four key goals in addition to the ongoing negotiation process and the crucial Global Stocktake response.

COP28 UAE, which is slated to take place at Expo City Dubai from November 30 to December 12, will concentrate its efforts on advancing a just, orderly and equitable energy transition; fixing climate finance; putting nature, lives and livelihoods at the heart of climate action; and mobilizing for the most inclusive COP.

The two-week thematic programme was developed in collaboration with stakeholders, including civil society, NGOs, youth, and Indigenous Peoples, to ignite action and enact policy, financial, and technological remedies. The effort included a six-week transparent consultation period where stakeholders were invited to offer suggestions on the theme domains and their arrangement. The COP Presidency made a ground-breaking decision with this strategy, being the first time such a participative endeavour has been undertaken.

Highlights

  • COP28 UAE Presidency will host critical climate talks alongside an ambitious and inclusive two-week thematic program.
  • An official program designed following COP28 President-Designate’s global listening and engagement tour and strategic vision and plan announcement at MoCA in July.
  • COP28 program to include first-ever days dedicated to Health/Relief, Recovery, Peace, and Trade and Multilevel Action/Urbanization.
  • The thematic program will run in both the Blue and Green Zones.

The event will kick off with a rousing two-day World Climate Action Summit and feature the official debut of the Global Stocktake response to world leaders. During this summit, the COP Presidency will vigorously seek pledges and guarantee accountability. The programme is further enhanced with special days that are themed and designed to address critical global concerns.

COP28 will set aside a day for discussions focused on Health, Relief, Recovery, and Peace in a first for COP conferences. Notably, one of the highlights of this theme day will be a high-level ministerial on climate health. In addition, COP28 will be the first to combine trade and finance discussions, highlighting its all-encompassing strategy. To coordinate efforts for sustainable cities that are cleaner, greener, and safer for both the present and future generations, the conference serves as a unique forum that brings together leaders from all levels of government and society.

An inclusive process that prioritizes frontline communities underpins each of the fortnight’s theme days. The conversations will focus on how finance, technology, and innovation can work together to create significant solutions.

Key themes and events:

  • November 30: COP28 UAE opens to the world at Expo City, Dubai.
  • 1-2 December: World Climate Action Summit
  • December 3: Health/Relief, Recovery, and Peace
  • December 4: Finance/Trade/Gender Equality/Accountability
  • December 5: Energy and Industry / Just Transition / Indigenous Peoples
  • December 6: Multilevel Action, Urbanization, and Built Environment/Transport
