Strict Regulations for Sustainable Coal Mining

WriteCanvas News

The Coal Ministry met with stakeholders to discuss stricter regulations for sustainable coal mining, incorporating environmental preservation measures.

Mining plans should incorporate restoration, remediation, and regeneration measures to ensure sustainable management of natural resources.

The actions aim to mitigate environmental impacts, address community concerns, and promote continuous improvements in water quality monitoring.

According to M. Nagaraju, Additional Secretary and Nominated Authority, the new guidelines prioritize ecosystem preservation while emphasizing responsible mining practices that support industry growth.

He stressed the importance of balancing increased accountability for coal mine owners. The updated Mining Plan Guidelines aim to enforce stricter regulations to maximize coal extraction while ensuring equal benefits for all stakeholders.

By bringing everyone’s interests into line, the ministry hopes to advance sustainable development in the industry.

The stakeholder consultation gave industry leaders and experts a forum for in-depth talks and feedback, paving the way for a comprehensive regulatory framework that tackles current issues and conforms to international best practices in mining governance.

Twenty-five coal and lignite mining companies, including PSUs and captive/commercial miners, participated in the event, as did representatives from the state governments of Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu and Chhattisgarh.

ISO Developing Net Zero Standard

WriteCanvas News

ISO is developing its first net zero international standard.

The aim is to provide clarity, robust requirements, and enable comprehensive climate action for a sustainable world.

Expected to launch at COP30 in November 2025, the new standard is being designed to provide a global solution to guide organizations as they embark on their net zero transition.

It is an evolution of the ISO Net Zero Guidelines, which aimed to provide credible best practice and protect against greenwashing.

Meanwhile, thousands of experts across more than 170 countries are expected to collaborate through national standards bodies. A public consultation is expected to open later in 2025 to support global input.

“ISO takes our role in supporting a net zero transition seriously. As part of our Climate Commitment, we look forward to delivering an international standard the market has been asking for, and importantly, suitable for organizations of all sizes, sectors and geographies,” said Noelia Garcia Nebra, Head, Sustainability, ISO.

SABIC, Pashupati Group Partner for Plastic Waste Recycling

WriteCanvas News

SABIC and Pashupati Group have partnered to tap plastic waste recycling opportunities in India. The partnership will also enable SABIC to expand its global network of qualified recycling partners in the country.

According to an MoU, both companies will share best practices and exchange knowledge in the processes of used plastic material. These include developing methods and adding value in processing using virgin and recycled polyolefin.

The agreement also provides an advanced plastic waste recycling project to convert used plastic into pyrolysis oil. SABIC will use the oil to produce certified circular polymers with the same performance properties as virgin plastics.

This collaboration follows SABIC’s 2021 collaboration with Malaysia-based plastic recycling company HHI, which created polymers from recovered ocean-bound and ocean plastics.

Sanjay Mishra, General Manager, Engineering Thermoplastics & Performance Polymers, SABIC, said, “This is a crucial first step in our efforts to support and accelerate the transformation of India’s plastics economy towards circularity. At the same time, it expands our collaboration with experienced local recyclers in Asia as we are continuously sourcing valuable feedstock to meet the growing demand for our TRUCIRCLE portfolio of recycled, circular polymers.”

Bankey Goenka, Managing Director, Pashupati Group, said, “This MOU is a testament to the commitment of both SABIC and Pashupati Group towards the circular economy and contributing to the conservation of our planet.”

Blue Economy: The Next Multiplier of Economic Growth

WriteCanvas News

The Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) in partnership with the World Bank recently released a report “India’s Blue Economy: Pathways for resource-efficient, inclusive, and resilient growth in India.”

The World Bank was the knowledge partner for the project. The report explores international best practices in implementing the Blue Economy, the ocean accounting framework, institutional strengthening, and creative financing mechanisms towards putting the Blue Economy Policy framework into practice.

As long as the Blue Economy strategy prioritizes sustainability and socioeconomic welfare, it has the potential to become the next great driver of economic growth and prosperity. It seeks to protect marine ecosystems and improve the lives of coastal communities, the report observes.

A whole ecosystem of cutting-edge, futuristic, and scientific research on all topics about the Blue Economy—that is, strategic, scientific, political, environmental, and economic interest—will be produced in India as a result of the Blue Economy, the report suggests.

India has a unique maritime position. Its 7,517 km long coastline and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of over two million square km is rich in living and non-living resources. The coastal economy also sustains over 4 million fisherfolk and other coastal communities.

With these vast maritime interests, the Blue Economy in India has a vital relationship with the nation’s economic growth. The efficient and sustainable use of ocean resources can enhance ocean-related capabilities, increase employment, and contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals while protecting the environment.

India’s ability to play a significant maritime role will be crucial as it strives to become a high-growth economy and simultaneously improve its capabilities to shape the geostrategic environment in its immediate and extended neighborhood. The full potential of marine resources, both living and non living, has not yet been fully investigated and utilized. A strong maritime economy supported by ports, coastal infrastructure, shipping, fishing, seaborne trade, offshore energy assets, tourism, undersea pipelines, communication cables, renewable energy, and seabed resources will also contribute to this ability, according to the report.

The Ministry of Earth Sciences hosted a consultative workshop on the status of the Blue Economy Pathways study report, involving representatives from various ministries and experts from the World Bank. The workshop discussed the collaborative role of each ministry in the report preparation.

Arranged by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), World Bank experts, representatives from the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation, the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Niti Aayog, the Ministry of Port Shipping and Waterways, and the Ministry of Tourism, attended the workshop.

SBTi Separates Standard Setting and Validation Units

WriteCanvas News

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), has separated its climate target standard setting and validation activities into distinct entities.

The move is aimed at improving governance, boosting credibility and integrity and increasing capacity, and is in line with best practices for assurance bodies.

SBTi also unveiled plans to increase its target validation capacity in order to meet significant demand growth. The organization saw an increase of 87% last year in the number of companies setting targets.

Further, SBTi is in the process of appointing an independent technical council to strengthen its standard setting processes.

Luiz Amaral, CEO, SBTi, said, “The moment for accelerating corporate climate action is right now. This action must be built on trust as businesses require the highest level of credibility for their targets. This year we have witnessed the three hottest months ever recorded; we must accelerate on all fronts. When I joined last year, my key remit was to build out the SBTi’s governance, while scaling up the organization in the face of enormous demand. I am elated to have an industry leader like Francesco Starace join as our Chair and welcome all of the new appointees on this important journey.”

In addition to the structural transformation, SBTi announced a series of key governance changes, including incorporating the organization in the UK, establishing itself as independent from its founding organizations.

Founded in 2015, SBTi was formed as a collaboration between CDP, World Resources Institute (WRI), the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), and the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), to establish science-based environmental target setting as a standard corporate practice.
