By 2030, India will need 2 lakh skilled professionals to reach its 30% EV adoption target.

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) predicts that the hiring and training of this workforce will require an investment of Rs 13,552 crore. Of this, the hiring costs are estimated to be around Rs 7,671 crore, while the training costs are around Rs 5,881 crore.

SIAM President Vinod Aggarwal, MD and CEO of Volvo Eicher Commercial Vehicle Ltd., discussed the need for specialized skills in battery technology, power electronics, and motor design at a workshop on EV-ready workforce.

The SIAM EV Skill Gap Study suggests increasing the number of EV-ready workers from 15,000 to 30,000 annually by 2030 for 100% localization of EV components.

The report reveals that 27% of technical competencies between ICE and EVs have high overlap, necessitating reskilling, and 43% have minimal overlap, necessitating skill development.

The talent demand includes both blue-collar and white-collar professionals, including technicians, PhD scientists, and engineers in electrical, mechanical, chemical, and electronics engineering disciplines.
